The National Trust Way to The Channel Country

17 day tour departing and returning to Sydney

In remote Queensland the Channel Country is generally bordered on the west by the Simpson Desert – and on the east by a line through Longreach down to Windorah. This vast region of enormous Mitchell Grass plains is intersected by the channels of the Georgina, Hamilton, Diamantina and Thomson rivers and a multitude of lesser streams. In the very best years the waters from this country fill Lake Eyre; every other year these free-flowing rivers renew again the flood plains.

About the Journey

From Innamincka across to Birdsville this is the most remote of all routes on any Quilty Tour. For stress-free travel 2 night stays are included at Innamincka, Birdsville, Winton, Longreach, and on Ray Station beyond Windorah. The vast plains country contrasts with the spectacular escarpments at Carisbrook Station and the ‘jump-ups’ in the Cooper Basin north of Innamincka. There is a palpable sense of remoteness in parts of the ever-changing scenery through which this journey will take you.

Some of the highlights

Early morning into the ‘jump-up’ country north of Tibooburra, a smoking fire that marks morning tea beneath the ghost gums on the Cooper, the Birdsville Pub, the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Qantas museum at Longreach, a day with Mark and Sandra Tully on their property Ray Station (Mark is the fourth generation of Tullys owners). But perhaps most of all it is those Mitchell Grass plains east of Boulia, so vast the horizon curves with the earth seemingly forever, that will most liberate the spirits on this wonderful journey.
