The National Trust Way to The Outback

17 day tour departing and returning to Sydney

Beyond Broken Hill to the Flinders Ranges via the heritage listed village of Mintaro in the Clare Valley; then to the spectacular Lake Eyre and desert regions of northern South Australia and the Cooper Basin. Returning through the Sturt National Park down to White Cliffs. This is ‘the Outback’ few Australians experience. From the ranges to the deserts a land of ever changing colours, where distant horizons give a new meaning to the expression ‘Open Spaces’.

About the Journey

This is the ‘original Quilty Tour’ – the National Trust has travelled this one with Richard every year since 1994. Whilst the journey covers more than 5,500km the pace is always leisurely – including 2 night stops at Broken Hill, Mintaro, Flinders Ranges, Marree and Innamincka; rest for an afternoon by a swimming pool at Roxby Downs. Beyond Lake Eyre the route follows the entire length of the Strzlecki Track. At Innamincka visit those parts of the Cooper Creek made famous by Burke and Wills.

Some of the highlights

In the ever-changing scenery it is difficult to select ‘highlights’. Perhaps it is the long road down the western escarpment of the Flinders Ranges at sunset, or coming suddenly on the vast Lake Eyre over the top of a sandhill, or beneath ghost gums on the white sandy banks of the Cooper Creek. Mintaro is the prettiest village in South Australia. For some it is driving north from Port Augusta – the feeling that Australia’s interior is about to open some of its secrets to the traveller. You will never be disappointed.
